We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Bus Driver to join our transportation team at Savannah-Chatham County Schools. This is a critical role that requires a high level of responsibility, attention to detail, and commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.

Job Summary

This 198-day position is responsible for transporting students to and from assigned education centers while maintaining a safe and comfortable environment on the bus. As a School Bus Driver, you will be expected to adhere to all department regulations, follow established routes and schedules, and ensure the timely arrival and departure of students.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance, with flexibility to adapt to changing schedules during the school year.
  • Contact dispatch to report same-day absences in accordance with the Driver's Handbook guidelines.
  • Operate designated routes according to stop schedules and transport students to and from school safely and efficiently.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections of buses as required by department regulations and conduct post-trip inspections to ensure student safety.
  • Fuel assigned buses as needed and record data in the auto-fueling system.
  • Deliver buses to the Fleet Maintenance shop as directed by pre-arranged schedules or as needed.
  • Submit reports and corrective time sheets in a timely manner, as required by the Transportation department.
  • Attend required training meetings, orientation, state safety meetings, and other requested meetings.
  • Operate the bus in accordance with Georgia laws and district policies, adapting to various weather conditions.
  • Maintain external and internal cleanliness of buses for safe and comfortable operation.
  • Monitor and operate communication devices for essential and emergency transmissions only.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required.
  • Report delays, accidents, and unusual situations to the Transportation Department promptly.
  • Maintain cordial relations with parents, administrators, other employees, and the general public.
  • Ensure student discipline on the bus and refer serious infractions to the appropriate administrator using District-approved processes.
  • Collect, maintain, and update emergency information and be aware of students' medical needs reported by parents/guardian/school staff.
  • Present a professional appearance at all times.
  • Have the ability to drive any make and model bus in the transportation fleet.
  • Special Education Lift Bus Only: Operate wheelchair lifts and secure doors during transport.
  • Special Education Lift Bus Only: Perform necessary tie-downs for wheelchairs and seat security devices for students.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

Salary and Benefits

This position is classified as a G-10 salary and is non-exempt. Public School Employees Retirement System eligibility applies. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Hold a valid Georgia Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a P and S endorsement.
  • Be at least 21 years old to obtain the license.
  • Have held a valid driver's license for at least five years prior to application.
  • Ability to lift equipment and/or students weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Pass a pre-employment and annual physical examination.
  • Successfully complete the Bus Driver Training Program provided by Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools Transportation Department.

Estimated Salary Range: $45,000-$60,000 annually, based on grade level and allowable experience.
