Optum ER Patient Registrar Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of registration requirements for various areas, including main admitting, OP registration, ED registration, maternity, and rehabilitation units.
  • Ensure accurate and timely entry of demographic information into the ADT system.
  • Properly identify patients to prevent medical record number duplication.
  • Review assigned accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Meet CMS billing requirements for MSP, Important Message from Medicare, and Observation Notice.
  • Collect and enter required data into the ADT system with emphasis on accuracy.
  • Verify patient information and correct errors.
  • Obtain patient signatures for required documents.
  • Scan documents into the appropriate system.
  • Provide printed material to patients, including patient rights and responsibilities, HIPAA notification, and advance directive.
  • Follow downtime procedures for manual patient information entry.
  • Assess self-pay patients for presumptive eligibility and initiate the process.
  • Monitor and address tasks associated with the Mede/Analytics PAI tool.
  • Verify insurance benefits using electronic verification systems or contacting payers directly.
  • Document insurance verification information in the ADT system.
  • Obtain referral, authorization, and pre-certification information.
  • Verify medical necessity checks for outpatient services.
  • Identify payer requirements for medical necessity.
  • Verify patient liabilities with payers and calculate payment.
  • Set up payment plans for patients who cannot pay in full.
  • Document conversations with patients regarding financial liabilities and payment agreements.
  • Apply payments to patient accounts and provide receipts.
  • Clarify division of financial responsibility between medical groups and insurance companies.

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1+ years of customer service experience
  • 1+ years of experience with requesting and processing financial payments
  • Beginner level of proficiency working with computers and data entry
  • Ability to work Thursday 12pm-6pm and Friday to Sunday 6am-6pm
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1+ years of experience in a hospital Patient Registration department, physician office setting, healthcare insurance company, revenue cycle vendor, or other revenue cycle related roles
  • General understanding of insurance policies and procedures
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Able to perform basic mathematics for payment calculation
Soft Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
