A licensed vocational nurse operates under the guidance of the Director of Nursing Services.

The Charge Nurse plays a crucial role in managing the daily operations of a designated nursing unit, which includes overseeing schedules, nursing assignments, delegation of resident care, and supervising nursing personnel.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing school or an approved RN or LVN program
  • Current nursing license, in good standing with the State licensing authority
  • Preferred experience in a long-term care environment
  • Exemplary leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to deliver patient care in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures
  • Critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate clinical data and observations for developing a nursing care plan
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant nursing principles, practices, and standards of care
  • Willingness to work with and supervise both professional and nonprofessional staff
  • Proficiency in the English language, including speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension
  • Valid CPR certification

General Responsibilities:

Administrative Duties:

  • Oversee and manage an assigned nursing unit, including the assignment and coordination of nursing care.
  • Provide guidance and support to nursing staff based on their training and the residents' needs.
  • Ensure compliance with facility-approved procedures and policies, as well as state and federal regulations.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Maintain safe, efficient, and effective shift operations.
  • Coordinate resident admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Conduct daily rounds to assess residents' physical and emotional well-being and implement necessary nursing interventions.
  • Observe and guide direct patient care staff to ensure proper techniques and adherence to facility policies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care plan meetings and contribute to individualized care plans for residents.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and infection control practices.
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Ensure all documentation is complete and complies with regulations and standards.
  • Assist with special projects or other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing.

Communication Duties:

  • Promptly communicate with patients and families regarding treatment and care.
  • Engage with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.

Supervisory Duties:

  • Meet regularly with unit personnel to identify and address problem areas and improve services.
  • Review and evaluate assigned personnel, providing written evaluations to the Director of Nursing.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other departments and nursing units.
  • Ensure all personnel adhere to established infection control practices.
  • Follow required coaching and disciplinary procedures.

Consumer Service Duties:

  • Maintain a professional image through dress, behavior, and communication.
  • Serve as a role model for staff.
  • Treat residents and family members with dignity and respect.
  • Address resident and family concerns and assist in resolving grievances.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the facility's Quality Assurance program as needed.
  • Ensure the protection of health information as mandated by HIPAA.
  • Engage in the facility's Infection Control Program.
  • Report hazardous conditions or equipment issues.
  • Orient new staff members as requested.
  • Attend various facility meetings as required.
  • Participate in in-services and educational classes to maintain nursing competency and knowledge of effective practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
