ECMO Specialist Lead Nurse Specialist

The ECMO Specialist Lead Nurse is responsible for supervising the operations related to ECMO therapy, collaborating with the CVICU and MSICU Manager, the ECMO Coordinator, ICC Physicians, and Cardiovascular Surgeons. This role requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to function in a preceptor role, educating and mentoring staff on ECMO therapy.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with the CVICU and MSICU Manager, the ECMO Coordinator, ICC Physicians, and Cardiovascular Surgeons to deliver high-quality patient care.
- Develop and maintain a pathway and standards for the orientation of new ECMO Specialists.
- Coordinate the preceptorship of all new ECMO Specialists and ensure all paperwork and competencies are complete.
- Coordinate and document any required competencies related to mechanical circulatory support (MCS) for existing Specialists.
- Actively round on ECMO patient population to maintain standards of care and mentor existing staff.
- Take an active role in staff development through rounding, case presentations, and participation in wet labs.
- Initiate daily huddle with Perfusion to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and modify the plan of care for patients receiving ECMO or other MCS as indicated by the patient's responses and conditions.
- Work with Perfusion and ECMO Coordinator in ordering, stocking, and setting par levels for ECMO supplies.
- Provide direction and acts as a resource to other members of the specialty team to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care.
- Work in conjunction with the ECMO Coordinator and collaboratively with all members of the MCS team.
- Provide individualized education for the patient, family, and or caregiver throughout the continuum of care.
Requirements
- RN licensure by Tennessee Board of Nursing or a Board of Nursing from a compact state.
- BLS and ACLS certification required.
- 3-5 years CVICU experience with expertise in mechanical cardiovascular support devices.
- Able to function in a preceptor role, i.e. is familiar with principles of adult learning.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
