Operations Manager Job Description

APM Terminals is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join our team. As an Operations Manager, you will be responsible for managing and providing training for ILA rail, vessel, and yard gangs and stevedoring. Your goal will be to maintain a safe work environment, maximize marine, yard, and gate productivity, control costs, and meet terminal and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure all daily work assignments are completed properly and safely by the Foremen/Chief Supervisors and hourly union labor you supervise.
  • Direct the Foreman/Chief Supervisors in their daily work assignments to minimize labor cost and maximize terminal efficiency.
  • Determine and order appropriate labor, including additional labor as needed and as business requires.
  • Permit hiring and scheduling competent labor and direct the labor workforce in the performance of their daily work assignments.
  • Monitor the arrival times of all labor, authorize any necessary overtime, ensure labor is properly identified on all payroll records, and ensure any and all appropriate payroll adjustments are made for labor based on their actual hours of work.
  • Determine necessary terminal equipment requirements and direct the labor working in the grounding operation to maximize terminal yard space, secure required chassis, and improve vessel productivity.
  • Use independent judgment and discretion in making important operational decisions, such as shifting operating units from task to task, assigning or reassigning gate clerks between functions, and directing the I.L.A. Foremen/Chief Supervisors to take appropriate action to achieve efficient and safe operations within the terminal facility.
  • Issue appropriate discipline to I.L.A. Foremen/Chief Supervisors whenever necessary, handle any grievances that are brought to your attention in an expeditious manner, and obtain all relevant facts and use independent judgment and discretion in adjusting any grievance.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma/GED; College degree preferred.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Basic proficiency with mobile phones and using mobile apps.
  • Ability to work nights, holidays, and weekends, and at times may be required to work significantly extended shift hours based on business need.
  • Current valid driver's license or ability to obtain one and ability to obtain insurance via company policies.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and be able to sit for long periods of time to patrol trucks.
  • Knowledge with continuous improvements projects and/or process improvements to add value to APM Terminals.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years supervisory or management experience.
  • 3+ years transportation, supply chain, warehouse, stevedoring experience or equivalent military experience.
