Job Summary

The Oncology Nurse Navigator at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is a professional registered nurse with advanced oncology-specific clinical knowledge who provides personalized support to patients and caregivers to overcome healthcare system barriers. Utilizing the nursing process, the Oncology Nurse Navigator promotes informed decision-making and timely access to quality patient care while serving as a vital link in communication between multidisciplinary providers both internal and external to MUSC during initial treatment planning.

Job Description

Training and Education

A Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and a minimum of three years related clinical nursing experience are required. In lieu of a BSN, a Master of Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is acceptable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as mentoring/coaching and organizational skills, are essential. The ability to develop, implement, and evaluate effective patient and staff educational programs is also required. Creative and resourceful problem-solving and exceptional critical thinking are necessary.

LICENSURE &/OR CERTIFICATION(S)

Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state is required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is also required, either from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements

The ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking is required. Climbing stairs, working indoors, and working in temperature extremes are also necessary. The ability to work from elevated areas, work in confined/cramped spaces, and perform job functions from kneeling positions is required. Squatting and performing job functions, bending at the waist, twisting at the waist, and reaching overhead are also necessary. Performing repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, fully using both legs, and using lower extremities for balance and coordination are required. Lifting and carrying 50 lbs. unassisted, lifting/lowering objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted, and exerting up to 50 lbs. of force are also necessary.

Work Environment

The ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes is required. Seeing and recognizing objects close at hand or at a distance, matching or discriminating between colors, and determining distance/relationship between objects; depth perception are necessary. Good peripheral vision capabilities and maintaining hearing acuity, with correction, are also required. Performing gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements, dealing effectively with stressful situations, and working rotating shifts are necessary. Working overtime as required and working in a latex-safe environment are also required.
