Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Surgical Assistant to join our team at Med Center Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Operating Surgeon during surgical procedures, ensuring the highest level of patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Operating Surgeon in carrying out safe aseptic techniques and procedures.
  • Observe and report contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique.
  • Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to operative procedures.
  • Perform positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient and gowns and glove the Surgeon and assistant.
  • Provide hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed by the surgeon.
  • Provide exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.
  • Handle tissues as directed by the surgeon, when making incisions and cutting the tissue.
  • Perform wound closure as directed by the surgeon; sutures the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin.
  • Apply surgical dressings.
  • Assist with the transfer of the patient from the operating room.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in-service education classes, committees as assigned, and orientation of new personnel to the unit.
  • Maintain patient's safety as defined in the Surgery Policy and Procedures and Nursing Policy and Procedures.
  • Remain calm and follow directions well. Know where emergency equipment is and how to use it.
Requirements
  • Four years of OR Scrub experience with two years First Assistant experience required.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technology Program required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required.
  • CFA or CSA certification required.
