Key Responsibilities
Deliver comprehensive pharmaceutical care in the Emergency Department
- Engage in daily patient care activities.
- Clarify medication orders with prescribers.
- Document changes in patient records and communicate medication order modifications.
- Monitor drug therapy for appropriateness in terms of dosage, regimen, and potential interactions.
- Provide pharmacokinetic consultations and necessary dosing adjustments.
- Identify, document, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
- Participate in managing drug therapy during medical emergencies.
- Encourage formulary compliance by converting non-formulary orders when feasible.
- Maintain and update patient profiles with relevant medical information.
- Assist in reconciling pharmacy and nursing medication records.
- Facilitate discharge and transfer processes for Emergency Department patients.
- Ensure timely antibiotic administration through appropriate channels.
- Provide counseling on discharge medications as needed.
- Optimize pharmacotherapy regimens based on current evidence-based practices.
- Stay updated on hospital pharmacy knowledge and maintain professional expertise.
Provide operational support in the Emergency Department and Central Pharmacy as needed
- Review medication orders for accuracy.
- Perform order entry for designated areas.
- Resolve issues related to drug distribution and automatic dispensing systems.
Promote rational and cost-effective drug therapy
- Identify opportunities for positive pharmacoeconomic impacts and develop targeted drug programs.
- Document clinical consultations and cost avoidance efforts.
- Monitor the use of high-cost medications to ensure compliance with established criteria.
- Anticipate changes in drug therapy and assess their potential impact on hospital budgets.
- Coordinate pharmaceutical care for ongoing research initiatives in the emergency department.
- Provide educational sessions for emergency department staff.
- Engage in research aimed at enhancing the role of pharmacists in emergency medicine.
- Contribute to teaching programs related to emergency medicine.
- Support personnel development for pharmacists in emergency medicine.
- Deliver presentations and publications on emergency medicine topics.
- Participate in hospital committees and emergency medicine team meetings.

Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited pharmacy school with a Bachelor of Science or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
- A minimum of two years of relevant hospital pharmacy experience or completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency.
- Current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Iowa.
- ACLS certification or completion within three months of hire.
- Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Familiarity with standard pharmacy equipment.
