Job Overview

Position Summary

The Patient Care Assistant plays a vital role in supporting patients with their daily activities, delivering fundamental nursing care to those who are not critically ill, and ensuring a safe and hygienic environment under the guidance of the supervising Registered Nurse.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Deliver basic nursing care to non-critically ill patients, addressing both psychosocial and physical needs within the Nursing Assistant's scope of practice.
  2. Provide general care that meets the psychosocial or physical needs of patients, or both, in accordance with the Nursing Assistant's responsibilities.
  3. Facilitate effective communication to meet the needs of patients.
  4. Exhibit initiative and accountability in performance as expected of a Nursing Assistant.
  5. Undertake additional duties as assigned, within the Nursing Assistant's scope of practice.
  6. Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes of patients.
  7. Perform basic patient care tasks while considering the specific needs related to the patient's age.
  8. Alert appropriate licensed personnel when patients express discomfort or pain.
  9. Effectively communicate any observed changes in patient status and responses to the RN.
  10. Assist with feeding patients and maintaining fluid balance, using techniques suitable for the patient's age and condition.
  11. Provide explanations to patients and their families prior to administering care, addressing questions within the scope of practice.
  12. Demonstrate proficiency in performing treatments and providing services within the defined scope of practice.
  13. Communicate clearly and appropriately with team leaders, colleagues, and physicians.
  14. Consult with other departments as necessary to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
  15. Deliver care that is appropriate to the patient's condition and age, including pediatric, geriatric, and general populations.
  16. Conduct all aspects of patient care in a manner that prioritizes patient safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors.
  17. Assist physicians with procedures and perform tasks requiring technical and manual skills under RN supervision.
  18. Exhibit flexibility, organization, and the ability to function effectively in stressful situations.
  19. Respond to patients in emergencies or distressing situations.
  20. Treat patients and their families with dignity and respect.
  21. Engage professionally with patients and families, involving them in the care planning process.
  22. Maintain positive working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  23. Adhere to current documentation standards and policies, completing necessary documentation within the shift.
  24. Safely and correctly manage and operate equipment.
  25. Coordinate and supervise patient care under the direct oversight of an RN.
  26. Demonstrate knowledge of various disease entities.
  27. Implement medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.

Education and Experience Requirements

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the State of Louisiana for Long Term Care Facilities.
  3. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Proficiency in additional languages is preferred.
