Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician

At Yale New Haven Health, we are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to join our team. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in providing accurate and timely laboratory results to support patient care.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of testing on blood, body fluids, and exudates to provide information used in the diagnosis of disease states.
  • Evaluate laboratory results with regards to accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Follow all laboratory and hospital safety policies.
  • Operate all department equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot instrument failures.
  • Follow all department QC procedures and troubleshoot QC failures with proper documentation.
  • Participate in inter and intra-department QA initiatives.
  • Respond to department staffing needs by covering extra shifts when necessary.
  • Maintain technical competency and seek clarification when necessary.
  • Effectively utilize all necessary LIS functions.
  • Assist supervisor in maintaining adequate inventory of reagents and supplies necessary for testing.
  • Collect blood samples, accurately identifying and labeling patient sample according to laboratory policy.
  • Utilize proper phlebotomy techniques and appropriate specimen containers.
  • Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development as outlined in performance review.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
  • Perform and accurately evaluate hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation tests.
  • Accurately prepare, document, and result hematology send-out specimens.
  • Participate in CAP transparency identifications.
  • Account for all specimens on the pending log and relay courses of action to other section shifts.
  • Prioritize activities to accommodate workflow fluctuations and special testing procedures.
  • In the absence of the supervisor, review daily work reports and quality control.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent required.

Previous experience is desirable but not required.

American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification (MT-ASCP) preferred.
