Job Summary

As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Yale New Haven Health, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results. Your primary responsibility will be to perform laboratory assays on various patient samples, such as blood and body fluids, and evaluate data for accuracy and appropriateness. You will also be responsible for reporting results to clinicians for patient diagnosis and treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Follow all laboratory and hospital safety policies.
  • Operate all department equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines, performing preventative maintenance and troubleshooting instrument failures as needed.
  • Follow all department QC procedures and troubleshoot QC failures with proper documentation.
  • Participate in inter and intra-department QA initiatives.
  • Respond to department staffing needs by covering extra shifts when necessary.
  • Maintain technical competency and seek clarification when necessary.
  • Effectively utilize all necessary LIS functions.
  • Assist supervisor in maintaining adequate inventory of reagents and supplies necessary for testing.
  • Collect blood samples, accurately identifying and labeling patient samples according to laboratory policy, utilizing proper phlebotomy techniques and appropriate specimen containers.
  • Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development as outlined in performance review.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
  • Perform and evaluate for accuracy all stat procedures in the chemistry and serology sections.
  • Prioritize stat testing to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Follow laboratory guidelines with regards to reporting panic or critical lab results and explain antibody problems or transfusion delays to clinicians.
  • Perform and interpret routine and advanced immunohematologic procedures, such as types and screens antibody panels and antigen typings, as indicated.
  • Prepare and issue appropriate blood and blood components for transfusion.
  • Evaluate patients for Rhig candidacy and order accordingly.
  • Perform and evaluate for accuracy all stat and routine testing in the hematology section.
  • Plate all cerebral spinal fluid cultures received on night shift using appropriate media.
  • Perform rapid beta strep screens, upon request.
  • Prepare and stain Gram stains for physician review, upon request.
  • Perform fetal fibronectin testing, upon request.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in medical technology or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE

Previous experience desirable but not required.

LICENSURE

American Society of Clinical Pathologists certification (MT-ASCP) preferred.
