Job Summary

The Director of Core Facilities will provide strategic leadership and oversight for all centralized Core Facilities at UMass Amherst, housed under the Institute for Applied Life Sciences. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing business strategies, ensuring fiscal viability, and promoting the use of Core Facilities by internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Planning
    • Develop and implement strategic plans for Core Facilities, incorporating sustainability and business models for current core services.
    • Provide research infrastructure planning and analysis of facility operating metrics.
  • Administrative Oversight
    • Act as a primary liaison between Core Facilities, IALS Leadership, and UMass Amherst internal departments.
    • Manage legal and regulatory agreements, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
  • Marketing and Engagement
    • Proactively market Core Facility services to internal and external customers.
    • Collaborate with departments and offices across campus to establish and operationalize research infrastructure.
Requirements
  • Master's Degree in business, engineering, or science-related field.
  • Five (5) years' experience in an academic or industry setting, with working knowledge of the core facility landscape.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex scientific and financial information.
  • Proven executive leadership experience, with a track record of successful leading and developing high-performing teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated track record of working well with multiple stakeholders within and outside the University.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple core facilities as independent business units.
Work Environment

This position indirectly reports to the Vice Chancellor of Research & Engagement and requires occasional work on nights and weekends.
