HEALTH UNIT COORDINATOR & NURSING ASSISTANT (HUC/NA)

Job Summary

This role requires cross-training in both Health Unit Coordinator and Nursing Assistant functions, tailored to the department's needs. Responsibilities encompass a blend of direct patient care and technical support to the RN, along with various clerical, scheduling, and supply tasks essential for the department's operations.

  • Organizes and labels charts for incoming patients
  • Accurately transcribes physician orders in a timely manner
  • Alerts the Patient Care Manager of any missing information on orders
  • Inputs all orders from Lab, X-Ray, etc., into the computer system
  • Ensures that each order on the physician's order sheet corresponds with the computer records
  • Retrieves records from previous admissions as necessary
  • Prepares charts for patient transfers and secures photocopies as needed
  • Completes discharge charts and ensures all documentation is accurate
  • Notifies the Patient Care Manager of any documentation deficiencies at discharge
  • Enters discharge information into the computer once the patient has left the unit
  • Updates kardexes with new admissions, dietary changes, or discharges and enters necessary information into the computer
  • Returns medications removed by the RN from the cassette at discharge to the Pharmacy
  • Conducts daily checks of medication supplies, obtaining necessary medications from the Pharmacy and supplies from CSR
  • Notifies relevant physicians regarding consultations, discharges, transfers, or expirations

Minimum Education Requirements: High School diploma or GED, completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant training program.

Minimum Work Experience: A minimum of one year in a hospital environment is preferred; alternatively, a student nurse who has completed two years of nursing education. Experience as a medical secretary and familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.

Other skills and abilities: Bilingual skills are a plus.

Equipment/Software/Certification: BLS certification is required.
