Position Summary
The Clinical Respiratory Care Specialist is responsible for executing therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of practice. This role operates under physician directives and is primarily situated in an adult outpatient rehabilitation environment.

This position is integral to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation team, which focuses on enhancing cardiovascular fitness and encouraging lifestyle modifications to elevate patients' activity levels and overall quality of life.

Key Responsibilities
In this capacity, the specialist will:

  • Conduct one-on-one evaluations with patients to assess and educate them on their specific respiratory requirements, including medication management and supplemental oxygen.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to monitor and advance patient progress during group exercise sessions.
  • Provide recommendations regarding home respiratory equipment, including oxygen therapy.
  • Educate patients on the use of breathing apparatuses.
  • Administer and adjust oxygen levels as necessary.
  • Monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation throughout exercise activities.
  • Ensure the proper setup, safety, and functionality of all equipment and supplies essential for patient care.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of respiratory devices.
  • Understand pharmacological implications, dosages, and potential adverse reactions.
  • Administer respiratory medications as required.
  • Conduct patient assessments in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provide educational support to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Document all relevant information in the patient medical record.
  • Communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team to share crucial clinical information.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Recognize life-threatening situations and initiate appropriate interventions.
  • In emergency scenarios, perform CPR and bag-mask ventilation.
  • Handle administrative tasks related to the daily operations of pulmonary rehabilitation and graduate programs.

Qualifications
Education:
Completion of a 2-year AMA accredited respiratory care program (Associate's Degree or equivalent) or current enrollment in an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program, with eligibility for registry.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.

Licensure and Certification:
North Carolina State Licensure or Provisional License is mandatory. Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required for graduates. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and any other relevant certifications applicable to the institution are also necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency in making informed clinical decisions and engaging with patients of varying ages. Skills validation and certifications for the responsibilities associated with this role are essential. Candidates must maintain annual skill and safety compliance requirements, as well as North Carolina's continuing education requirements for licensure.

This role involves interaction with patients of all ages, their families, physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals. The work environment encompasses all areas of Duke Hospital and may necessitate lifting or pushing weights exceeding 30 pounds, along with walking, climbing, and bending.
