Role Summary

The Medical Physics Specialist is responsible for delivering expert medical physics services. This role involves collaboration with radiation oncologists to design and adjust radiation treatment plans for patients, including the assessment and interpretation of medical radiation treatment prescriptions. Key responsibilities include:
  1. Conducting calibration checks, safety evaluations, and acceptance testing of linear accelerators and other radiation sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  2. Establishing, overseeing, and maintaining quality assurance protocols across radiation therapy practices.
  3. Consulting with radiation oncologists and clinical staff regarding patient treatment plans and radiation safety measures.
  4. Providing training and guidance to technical personnel on new technologies and operational protocols.
  5. Delivering educational sessions and training for other healthcare professionals.
  6. Addressing technical issues and offering expert advice and support as required.
  7. Investigating advancements in equipment and techniques, evaluating their implications for current clinical practices.
  8. Staying updated on health and safety regulations and procedures.
  9. Performing additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

A minimum of a Master's degree in Radiation Therapeutic Medical Physics is required. Candidates should possess at least six months of relevant experience in the specified duties. Board certification as a Medical Physicist (ABR, ABMP, or equivalent) is preferred. A Texas State License in Therapeutic Medical Physics is mandatory.

Essential Skills and Requirements

Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are crucial. The ideal candidate will have a strong ability to analyze and improve operational processes, develop policies, and implement innovative strategies. A comprehensive understanding of contemporary radiation therapy principles, methods, and techniques is essential. Familiarity with the operational characteristics, applications, and safety standards of a wide range of radiation therapy equipment is required. The ability to supervise and mentor staff, including organizing and prioritizing work tasks, is important. Experience in developing and presenting educational programs or workshops is advantageous. A broad knowledge of products within the specialty area and the capability to create purchasing specifications is beneficial.
