Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Physical Scientist to join our team at the Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for analyzing geospatial data and preparing graphics to display abandoned mine and critical mineral data for scientific studies, public outreach, and decision-making purposes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Compile and manipulate complex national geospatial databases using ArcGIS Pro.
  • Train collaborators in Federal, State, and Tribal agencies on how to populate USGS databases.
  • Prepare reports on results of investigations for publication in USGS series and external peer-reviewed professional journals.
  • Present project status and results at meetings and conferences.
  • Operate a government-owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • One-year probationary period.
  • Valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, which includes a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics. Additionally, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience or a combination of education and experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service.

Examples of qualifying experience may include independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine physical science work.

Working Conditions

This position requires travel for official business and the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. The selectee will also be required to operate a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of their official duties.

Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record.

A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.
