Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is on the lookout for a dedicated and skilled Systems Engineer to oversee, enhance, and maintain our technology infrastructure. This pivotal role within our Information Security & Technology (IST) Department will assist the IST Director in strategizing, developing, and executing IT initiatives; procuring, implementing, and managing network engineering, business applications, database systems, surveillance, and mobile technologies to improve operational efficiency and security.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Addressing escalated service challenges and mentoring IST personnel towards effective solutions.
  • Facilitating the deployment and management of various operating systems, including Windows 10/11, Android, iOS, Mac OS, and Windows Server 2008 or later.
  • Providing application support for Microsoft 365, Office 365, SQL, and Azure Cloud services.
  • Managing network system software, protocols, and standards, including SonicWALL, Cisco Catalyst, and Meraki devices.
  • Overseeing backup and restoration processes for both on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Implementing enterprise endpoint protection solutions such as Windows Defender.
  • Administering hybrid configurations of Active Directory and related services.
  • Deploying and managing SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS solutions.
  • Administering Azure Cloud Services, including Azure Active Directory and Microsoft Sentinel.
  • Managing mobile device management systems and virtual server deployments.
  • Documenting and maintaining system configurations and processes.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in systems engineering.
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) and CompTIA Network+ and Security+.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with railroad industry IT and OT systems.
  • Knowledge of current cybersecurity protocols and standards.
  • Certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Certified Systems Engineer Professional (CSEP).
  • Experience in disaster recovery planning.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple complex projects.

Additional Requirements:

Possession of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record is essential. Flexibility to work outside of standard business hours is required in this dynamic commuter rail environment.
