We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Urban Planning Specialist to join our team at the City of Miami Gardens, FL. As a key member of our Planning and Zoning Department, you will be responsible for managing complex planning projects, including comprehensive plans, master planning, and urban design.
Key Responsibilities- Perform lead work in organizing, coordinating, and monitoring development projects.
- Administer, interpret, explain, and enforce zoning ordinances, policies, and procedures.
- Evaluate and review development projects for consistency with the Land Development Regulations and Comprehensive Plan policies of the City.
- Review and process a wide range of zoning applications and building permits, including residential and commercial building permits, site plan review, subdivision platting, landscape plans, administrative variances, certificates of use, group homes, right-of-way vacation/dedication, signage, tree removal/relocation, and addressing.
- Prepare text and map amendments for updates to both the Land Development Regulations and Comprehensive Plan.
- Prepare and present staff reports and recommendations to the City Council for public hearings.
- Provide information on zoning requirements to the public, other staff, design professionals, and elected officials.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of community plans and other long-range planning projects as assigned.
- Conduct research and analysis, appropriately utilize technical and statistical information, and write reports for special projects on various topics, including land use, development, environment, transportation, and community design.
- Provide project management and contract management for consultant services contracts.
- Organize and coordinate public input and participation for a variety of planning initiatives.
- Represent the Planning and Zoning Department at meetings of boards and committees within the City or at other levels of local government, working groups, and committees on planning matters.
- Meet with technical and design experts, advisors, and consultants to exchange information regarding urban design, architectural planning issues, and policies and potential development alternatives; recommend corresponding changes in local ordinances.
- Conduct field inspections.
- Actively listen to understand customer needs.
- A Master's Degree in urban and regional planning or a closely related field with at least 5 years of planning experience; or a Bachelor's Degree in urban and regional planning or a closely related field with at least 7 years of planning experience.
- Planning experience must include managing projects at a responsible level for state, county, or local government planning agency or private organization directly involved in community planning, urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, community development, or land development and design.
- American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) Certificate is preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license throughout employment.
