Responsibilities:


Job Summary / Purpose:
The role primarily involves working within the laboratory's specimen processing and intake department. Responsibilities include assisting with specimen management and performing clerical tasks as needed. The position may involve blood collection and specimen processing, and, where permitted by local and state regulations, may include conducting waived or moderately complex testing, depending on departmental requirements.

Essential Key Job

Responsibilities:

1. Ensures accurate patient identification at all times across all job functions.

2. Demonstrates kindness and professionalism in all interactions with patients and colleagues, fostering effective communication within the department and across the healthcare facility.

3. Takes ownership of departmental workflow, assisting team members to maintain efficiency and productivity. Cultivates a collaborative atmosphere through positive conduct and teamwork.

4. Processes specimens for laboratory analysis, ensuring organized distribution within the department. Expedites the movement of processed samples to relevant laboratory departments for testing.

5. Manages laboratory send-out testing, including processing, organizing, and packaging samples for external laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures.

6. Utilizes sound judgment in problem-solving and seeks assistance when necessary.

7. May perform phlebotomy, adhering to blood collection protocols and executing venous and capillary punctures for all patient demographics, including blood bank collections. Employs appropriate techniques to ensure quality sample collection while meeting volume requirements.

8. May assist in training new phlebotomy staff under the guidance of a supervisor or coordinator.


9. As permitted by local and state regulations, may conduct CLIA waived and moderately complex laboratory tests following documented technical policies and procedures. Evaluates and reports test results under the supervision of a Clinical Lab Scientist, ensuring result validity by considering quality control data, instrument performance, specimen integrity, and historical patient results.

10. Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and maintains accurate records as per training.

11. Monitors inventory levels of departmental supplies, assists in restocking, and completes reagent logs.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED

Required Certification and License:
BLS-CPR certification upon hire or transfer

Preferred Certifications:
Certification from a Lab Assistant Program

Certificate from a Phlebotomy Program

Preferred Experience:
Minimum of 6 months experience in an acute care environment

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training:
Strong customer service and time management skills.
