Position Summary

The Specimen Handling Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the precise receipt, preparation, and storage of all specimens while delivering exceptional service to our clients. This technical role demands outstanding customer service skills, attention to detail, organizational abilities, and effective prioritization.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Accessioning and entering data for incoming specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Verifying requisitions for completeness and ensuring proper collection, identification, labeling, and specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory protocols for handling, accessioning, and storage.
  • Keeping meticulous records of specimen rejections and problem logs.
  • Directing specimens to the appropriate departments.
  • Coordinating with external pathology laboratories to obtain necessary patient samples for test orders, as required.
  • Assisting with the logistics of specimen shipping and communicating testing statuses and any discrepancies to collection sites as needed.
  • Collaborating with collection sites to resolve any communication issues.
  • Gathering essential clinical information for quality control and billing purposes; liaising with billing services to ensure all necessary clinical information is provided.
  • Engaging with physician office staff, patients, and payors to confirm coverage and secure preauthorization for testing when necessary.
  • Following up on final reports and ensuring the return of any related patient testing samples to their original laboratory.
  • Upholding patient privacy and complying with applicable HIPAA regulations.
  • Supporting daily laboratory operations and responsibilities, including general laboratory duties to maintain a CLIA certified laboratory, which encompasses quality control activities.
  • Demonstrating strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Embodying the company's mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
  • Adhering to the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining regular and reliable attendance.
  • Being able to work the designated schedule and overtime as required.
  • Proficiently using a computer and phone simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with healthcare and research professionals.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated capability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in a biological science field.
  • Experience in handling medical specimens.

Compensation

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $34,000 to $54,000. This role is eligible for bonuses and company stock upon hire and annually.
