Position Summary

The role involves delivering nutrition services while engaging in departmental performance enhancement initiatives, ensuring adherence to the Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Clinical Ladder guidelines. The primary focus is on achieving patient/client satisfaction, maintaining quality care, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering positive public relations through effective resource management.

As a member of the Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute's Pediatric Cardiology HEARTest Yard team, this dietitian will oversee the nutritional requirements for the outpatient Neurodevelopmental clinic, manage the care of interstage complex congenital heart infants, and support the infant home nasogastric tube program. Collaborating team members include a Pediatric Cardiologist, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, Speech Language Pathologist, and Social Worker.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Evaluate and monitor the nutritional status of patients/clients, adjusting care plans based on current scientific literature and integrating this information with medical status, anthropometric data, clinical assessments, and nutrition evaluations.
  2. Provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and counseling, which includes assessment, education, and the development, monitoring, and implementation of MNT for patients/clients in designated areas.
  3. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to incorporate nutrition into comprehensive patient/client therapy programs.
  4. Complete all necessary documentation, including nutritional care plans, assessments, consultations, nutrient intake analyses, and patient/client education, in a timely and professional manner.
  5. Assess the effectiveness of patient/client and family education, developing and utilizing appropriate educational materials tailored to each learner's developmental and educational level.
  6. Conduct periodic in-services on selected topics for team members and other disciplines as requested, with supervision from the clinical manager or designee.
  7. Participate in the orientation, training, and mentoring of team members and dietetic interns under the guidance of the manager or designee.
  8. Disseminate findings from nutrition research to medical team members, nursing staff, pharmacy, patients, and the public.
  9. Engage with multidisciplinary departments regarding patient/client care and performance feedback to uphold standards of excellence for customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

Minimum of 1 year of clinical pediatric experience is preferred. Certification as a Lactation Counselor or as a Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition is also preferred.

Physical Requirements

Must possess the ability to communicate verbally on a continuous basis and read written communications both in hard copy and on a computer screen. The role requires the ability to compose written communications frequently and occasionally lift and carry objects weighing 25 pounds or less. Frequent walking, standing, and sitting are necessary, with infrequent squatting, twisting, and bending.

Education and Certifications

A Bachelor's degree is required. Candidates must be RD/LDN registry eligible or a Registered Dietitian (Commission on Dietetic Registration) and licensed by the NC Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. If RD/LDN registry eligible, registration must be completed within 4 months of hire. Specialty certifications (e.g., CDCES, CNSC, AND Certifications) may be required based on departmental requirements.
