Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Patient Care Technician to join our Orthopedic Trauma Surgery Unit team at VCU Health. As a Patient Care Technician, you will provide direct, age-specific care to patients in our unit, making adjustments as needed to ensure their comfort, personal hygiene, and safety. You will work under the direction of the RN or licensed independent practitioner to deliver high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and direct care to patients in the Orthopedic Trauma Unit, monitoring their conditions and providing updates to the healthcare team.
  • Assist patients with and without medical/surgical complications to meet their comfort, personal hygiene, and safety needs.
  • Deliver care in accordance with nursing and medical plans of care and VCU Health policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and stocked environment to facilitate patient care and unit functioning.
  • Contribute to the patient experience by accurately identifying patients, observing safety goals, and reporting to licensed practitioners regarding patient responses to care or incidents posing harm.
  • Collect and record patient information, including vital signs, intake/output, calorie counts, and other relevant data.
  • Assist with specimen collection for diagnostic or waived tests.
  • Attend mandatory in-services and trainings, adhering to online training requirements.
  • Ensure patient safety through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain courteous and effective rapport with patients, visitors, coworkers, and other healthcare team members.
Requirements
  • High School degree or equivalent required.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Military Corpsmen/Medic, or Nursing Aide Training Program completion or experience within a healthcare environment.
  • Ability to assist with feeding, hydration, and nutrition, ambulation, and patient mobility.
  • Knowledge of patient data collection and documentation, basic hygiene, and activities of daily living care.
  • Accountability for completion of assigned tasks and ability to wear personal protective equipment as needed.
Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
  • May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
  • May be required to use physical restraints.
  • May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
  • May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids.
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting/Carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Push/Pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Climb, stoop, kneel, squat, balance, bend.
