The Radiation Therapy Student Extern is responsible for delivering the prescribed radiation treatment accurately as outlined by the supervising Radiation Oncologist. This role involves ensuring all necessary documentation, including dose prescriptions and consent forms, are completed prior to initiating treatment.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Interaction: Explain treatment procedures to patients and maintain open communication throughout the therapy sessions.
- Emergency Preparedness: Stay informed about emergency protocols to ensure patient safety during treatments.
- Room Preparation: Set up the treatment area and equipment according to the specifications provided by the Radiation Oncologist, including the use of immobilization devices and protective measures.
- Patient Transfer: Safely assist patients onto the treatment table, paying special attention to any medical devices they may have.
- Treatment Administration: Monitor and deliver the prescribed radiation dose while maintaining visual and audio contact with the patient.
- Documentation: Take and document photographs of patients and their treatment areas, ensuring all records are accurately maintained.
- Observation: Monitor patients for any unusual reactions during treatment and report findings to the supervising Radiation Oncologist.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to radiation safety protocols to protect both patients and staff.
- Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance activities, including routine checks and documentation of treatment processes.
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that all treatment equipment is functioning properly and report any malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
Education:
Preferred: High School Diploma, Associate in Applied Sciences.
Licenses & Certifications:
Required: L-Student Extern, C-ARRT - RT T ARRT, L-Radiography RRT.
Preferred: C-BLS.
This position requires a commitment to patient care and adherence to departmental policies and procedures, all under the supervision of a licensed Radiation Therapist or Radiation Oncologist.
