Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Staff Attorney to join our team in the Department of Labor and Industry. As a Senior Staff Attorney, you will serve as a litigation lead counsel in Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) contested cases in circuit courts, and provide legal and technical support in the development of standards, regulatory rulemaking, policy formulation, and legislative proposals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research and analyze legal issues upon request from agency staff to facilitate compliance efforts under applicable laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Present findings and recommendations to agency leadership resulting from the legal research and analysis.
  • Handle more complex cases and provide legal and technical support in the development of standards, regulatory rulemaking, policy formulation, and legislative proposals.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of Virginia Rules of Civil Procedure and the Virginia Administrative Process Act.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • An active member of the Virginia State Bar.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Litigation experience.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws governing Labor, and Occupational Safety and Health, as well as the ability to conduct research and analysis.
  • Experience in a similar position in government or private industry.
