Senior Logistics and Transportation Supervisor
The Senior Logistics and Transportation Supervisor will cultivate a department culture centered on personnel, safety, service excellence, and cost efficiency through impactful interactions with transportation leaders and team members. Utilizing their extensive knowledge in logistics operations, they will guarantee safe, precise, and timely outbound deliveries to clients and other distribution centers within the organization, while fostering a secure working environment for all employees.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, typical start time: 6 AM (subject to change based on operational needs)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Attain all safety, service, and cost objectives within the Transportation department. Promote a safety-first mindset that ensures the well-being of all associates, customers, and the public during interactions with drivers. Advocate for safety protocols, processes, and training to establish and uphold a safety-oriented culture.
• Mentor and develop Transportation Managers through personalized coaching, training on policies and procedures, aiding in problem-solving, and exemplifying leadership.
• Guide and enhance the performance of drivers and transportation staff by collaborating with Transportation Managers to address performance gaps. Foster associate engagement and retention, cultivating a culture that reflects the core values of the organization.
• Build high-performing teams by assessing staffing needs and overseeing the recruitment and hiring of transportation personnel. Evaluate performance, provide coaching to meet service and safety goals, and administer disciplinary actions when necessary.
• Monitor production targets and maintain a zero-error approach to ensure accuracy and customer satisfaction. Proactively identify, analyze, and resolve delivery issues, implementing cost-effective and compliant solutions while directing managers in execution. Ensure adherence to company, state, and federal DOT regulations.
• Enhance delivery reliability by designing efficient production flow processes and identifying opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction aligned with business objectives.
• Identify and eliminate waste while improving processes to enhance safety and efficiency.
• Analyze daily performance metrics; identify weaknesses; and recommend adjustments to senior management to ensure productivity goals are met.
• In unionized environments, collaborate with HR and senior management to interpret collective bargaining agreements, administer appropriate disciplinary measures, resolve routine grievances, and participate in arbitration as needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
SUPERVISION:
• Direct: Transportation Managers, union and/or non-union transportation associates (Dispatchers, Transportation Clerks, etc.), Routers (location-dependent)
• Indirect: Union and/or non-union drivers
RELATIONSHIPS:
• Internal: Transportation leaders and colleagues; senior management; drivers; routers; warehouse leadership; internal customers across departments (e.g., Sales)
• External: Customers
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• The role involves time spent in an office setting working on a computer, as well as time in a vehicle with drivers, which may expose the individual to higher noise and vibration levels than typically experienced in passenger vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience/Requirements:
• A minimum of five years of experience in transportation or delivery supervision is required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Comprehensive understanding of transportation and delivery operations, methods, and procedures.
• Strong leadership, communication, and team development capabilities.
• Ability to communicate openly and effectively with all associates and departments within the organization.
• In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, inventory management, OSHA, and other regulatory standards.
• Capability to interpret financial and operational data.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
Travel:
• 10% travel required, typically for mandatory meetings and/or training.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
• High school diploma or GED required; a college degree is preferred.
