Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the USDA Livestock Grading Certification within six months of hire.

Job Responsibilities / Key Functions:

The (Part-Time) Market News Reporter is tasked with the collection and dissemination of market pricing at designated livestock auction venues weekly.

·Acquire knowledge of USDA Grading Standards and Guidelines to compile market data including price, USDA grade, class, weight, and market trends of cattle and goats sold at assigned venues each week.

·Assess cattle in accordance with specific USDA standards and guidelines.

·Compile and analyze market data into written reports; upload market information to USDA utilizing USDA's online platform.

·Input reports into the official USDA database via computer, which will be provided.

·Attend auction markets in assigned regions, 2 – 3 days per week based on market schedule. Must arrive an hour prior to the sale and remain until all livestock is sold.

·Mileage reimbursement is available for travel from residence to assigned livestock markets and back.

Additional duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

·Familiarity with the livestock industry and related management practices.

·Understanding of various livestock species.

·Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact accurately and timely with peers, management, and the private sector.

·Proficient in the use of computers and smartphones.

·Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite.

·Reliable transportation is required.

·Valid driver's license is necessary.

·Ability to endure extended periods of sitting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A vocational or technical degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, pest control, entomology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution OR a high school diploma or GED AND one year of relevant experience OR two years of college, including 12 semester/20 quarter hours in chemistry or life sciences.

NOTE: The Georgia Department of Agriculture conducts background checks on all final candidates. The hiring of applicants is contingent upon satisfactory results of employment verification, background and criminal records investigations, and motor vehicle reports.
