Summary:

Pharmacy Technicians play a vital role in supporting Clinical Pharmacists by delivering pharmacy services with dedication, precision, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:


• Uphold the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Pharmacy Technicians are tasked with performing strictly technical duties under the direct oversight of a pharmacist.

Operational Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist Pharmacists in compiling Medication Histories.

• Mentor and train Pharmacy Technician I associates.

• Prepare medication orders as per physician directives, adhering to established policies and protocols.

• Accurately verify computerized patient medication records and maintain comprehensive patient drug records.

• Compound pharmaceuticals, including non-sterile and sterile products, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition solutions with precision.

• Distribute controlled substances to patient care areas and maintain records in compliance with legal and institutional requirements.

• Deliver services promptly and efficiently.

• Ensure daily departmental activities are completed and documented.

• Maintain the necessary competencies for the current position.

• Keep current technician licensure and ensure continuing education records are up to date. Attend departmental meetings.

• Maintain IV certification and competencies.

• Complete all required competency assessments.

• Specialty area involvement

• Serve as a technician in specialized areas such as the operating room, IV room, or other pharmacy workspaces outside the central pharmacy.

• Ambulatory care responsibilities

• Provide ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including anticoagulation clinics and medication reconciliation.

• Retail functions

• Execute outpatient distribution tasks related to processing prescription orders, selecting appropriate medications, and coordinating medication delivery for patient pick-up or dispatch. Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure safe, effective, and economical drug therapies for patients in accordance with established protocols.

• Accurately read, extract, and interpret information from patient medical records.

• Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions promptly and accurately.

• Support the hospital's drug formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements and promoting rational drug therapy choices.

• Provide timely and accurate drug information to pharmacy staff.

• Facilitate pharmacist-led drug education for patients and their families following institutional guidelines.

• Engage in quality improvement and medication review activities within the department. Collect data, conduct monitoring, and maintain necessary documentation.

• Perform designated clinical interventions as defined by departmental protocols.

• Adhere to departmental standards for reporting clinical productivity interventions.

• Deliver services efficiently and in a timely manner. Occupational Hazards

• Potential exposure to hazardous substances, including chemotherapeutic agents and cleaning solutions, as well as risks associated with needles and sharp instruments.

• Risk category 0 for exposure.

• Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not followed.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a pharmacy technician is preferred.
  • Must meet all criteria for Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice is required.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.
  • Completion of an ACPE accredited IV certification program, including hazardous materials (minimum 40 hours); or meet minimum state requirements. Not applicable to Ambulatory Care or Retail settings.
