Job Summary:

As a Public Safety Officer at Saint Louis University, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of our students, patients, visitors, and employees. You will apply crime risk and safety hazard prevention techniques, methods, practices, and enforce University laws and regulations. This position requires the ability to exercise the power of arrest as an armed Public Safety Department employee. You will have the opportunity to administer public safety to our diverse Saint Louis University community using state-of-the-art technology, including computer-aided record keeping for report writing, card-issued building access, and high-tech video monitoring systems. Uniforms, equipment, and training are all provided at no cost to you.

Responsibilities:
  • Patrol assigned areas in a vehicle or on foot, providing assistance and direction to University visitors, students, and employees.
  • Confront and question suspiciously acting persons present on University property; report suspicious persons seen on public property adjoining University property to the St. Louis Police Department.
  • Monitor and report on a continual basis all conditions that create security or safety hazards on University property; make recommendations regarding prevention techniques, devices, or equipment that would correct the hazard.
  • Investigate and submit reports concerning criminal offenses committed against Saint Louis University students, visitors, patients, and employees; arrest and/or detain any individual(s) committing an offense against the University or University property.
  • Respond to fire and security alarms on University property; provide initial fire rescue techniques at the scene of fires until the St. Louis City Fire Department arrives.
  • Provide assistance to members of public safety agencies present on University property performing in their official capacities; provide security and safety for visiting dignitaries or special guests of the University while performing on an individual assignment or as a member of a team.
  • Provide initial emergency medical care to members of the University community and visitors until appropriate medical care arrives; exercise supervisory authority at the scene of emergency situations until the arrival of supervisory personnel.
  • May be assigned as a team member or leader during major investigations or events requiring crowd control or special tactical units.
  • Investigate vehicle accidents that occur on University property or on public streets, at the direction of the St. Louis City Police Department; enforce University vehicle traffic and parking regulations.
  • Provide field training for junior officers.
Requirements:
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Associate degree in business, security, safety administration, or criminal justice; supplemented with one (1) year of experience in a position requiring the use of interpersonal/communication skills and high public interaction.
  • Must possess and maintain an armed private security officer license under the guidelines of the St. Louis City Police Department.
  • Requires passing psychological screening, and drug screening upon hire and throughout employment.
  • Must obtain a valid Missouri/Illinois chauffeur's license and a Motor Vehicle License References check.
