Patient Care Technician Job Description

Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide patient care under the direct supervision of a Hemodialysis Registered Nurse for assigned patients in the dialysis suite.
  • Report and document all new and unusual incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the RN.
  • Promote and assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
  • Support the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAI) Activities.
  • Set up and prime equipment as directed by the Fresenius Nurse for renal replacement therapies.
  • Ensure the dialysis machine has been set up, tested, and found to be safe for dialysis treatment.
  • Obtain necessary pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Report unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.
  • Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to the patient treatment.
  • Calculate and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; Sodium (Na) modeling; and UF modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled.
  • Collect, label, and ensure timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician's order or as directed by the FMCNA RN.
  • Monitor patient's response to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to the FMCNA RN.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • At least 6 months' experience in a related field (EMT, Surgical Technicians, Army, Phlebotomists, and technicians) is preferred.
  • Must obtain CCHT within 18 months of hire.
  • Effective communication skills - both verbal and written.
  • Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
