Job Summary:

The Library Technician Assistant will work under the supervision of the Library Director, providing public and technical services, and administrative support throughout the library. This role involves cataloging, maintaining, and circulating library materials, performing data entry, staffing the circulation desk, and providing clerical support as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide circulation desk services, including checking in/out materials, issuing library cards, and requesting payment of overdue fines and collecting for lost or damaged materials.
  • Offer public services, assisting patrons with the online public access catalog, navigating the library's website, computer databases, and the internet.
  • Perform switchboard operations, answering the telephone in a timely manner and directing calls to the proper party.
  • Maintain inventories of equipment, supplies, and library materials, including print materials and equipment.
  • Assist the library staff in the checkout, processing, maintenance, and tracking of equipment such as laptops and tablets.
  • Schedule, deliver, and retrieve equipment needing repair and maintenance, ensuring proper work has been completed.
  • Perform standard office management duties and provide clerical support to the Library as needed.
  • Process library materials, applying dust jackets, plastic covers, labels, security tags, and other identifying information.
  • Process daily incoming mail, maintain periodical and newspaper collections, collect fines and fees, and create receipts and documentation.
  • Clean, dust, and vacuum equipment and library furniture as needed, and shelf items under the Library of Congress Classification System.
  • Troubleshoot problems with library computers and assist patrons with printing issues.
  • Assist with keeping the library's website and library's website guides (LibGuides) updated and current.
  • Clip newspaper articles from local papers and create scrapbooks for the library's records.
Requirements:
  • Associate degree (or working toward the completion of at least a two-year degree) from an accredited college or university with major course work in office technology, computer technology, library science, or a related field, and at least two years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated competencies using technology, including library computers, equipment, library-related software, and current knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Office 365.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience working with the public in a customer service capacity and maintaining a professional demeanor with a customer service mindset.
  • Experience working with integrated library systems; knowledge of SirsiDynix's Symphony system, as well as the Evergreen system, is preferred.
  • Trustworthy with confidential patron information and working with debt collection.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in working with colleagues, students, faculty/staff, and other members of the VGCC community; a flexible team player who works comfortably in a dynamic library and academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in library science, computer technology, business, or another related field.
  • Experience working in the North Carolina Community College system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification System.
Physical Demands:

The duties of this position may require intermittent light to moderate physical effort in carrying, lifting, or moving lightweight materials or equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee must be able to climb on ladders and have a good command of the English language.

Physical requirements include: frequent bending, standing, walking; continuous ability for speech communication and hearing in order to communicate with library users, vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information.

Mental demands require continuous ability for both oral and written communication; frequent problem-solving and concentration; and occasional analytical ability and creativity. Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment.
