Position Overview

The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a multifaceted scientific entity that provides a broad and innovative research and development framework for an expanding space enterprise. The Chemical Propulsion and Environmental Science section of the Propulsion Science Department conducts laboratory experimentation utilizing various vacuum and high-energy testing facilities. As a Research Associate III - Propulsion Systems, you will play a crucial role in supporting scientists and engineers in both the development and execution of experiments, as well as managing the operations of related laboratories. Your responsibilities will also include integrating activities within a comprehensive laboratory system and/or multiple integrations, along with custom testing activities. These tasks encompass the integration of design, setup, data collection, and analysis, guided by senior staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical assessments, research and development, risk mitigation, and anomaly investigation through laboratory experimentation and analysis.
  • Provide direct support to research scientists and engineers within the Propulsion Science Department, while interfacing with other internal support organizations as necessary.
  • Utilize a wide array of hands-on skill sets to achieve project objectives, ensuring the success of departmental initiatives.
  • Engage in the design, fabrication, instrumentation, and troubleshooting of new experiments, alongside the maintenance of existing setups.
  • Contribute significantly to the readiness of our chemical propulsion testing infrastructure.

Qualifications for Success

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Chemical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in an industrial or research setting.
  • Basic fabrication skills, including cutting, drilling, and tapping of metals, masonry, and plastics.
  • Proficient in mechanical CAD and collaborating with shops for precision machining.
  • Familiarity with tube fitting and bending techniques.
  • Knowledge of electrical and data acquisition systems, including measurement hardware, sensors, wiring, and data acquisition software.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to support customer needs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be advantageous if you possess:

  • A Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Chemical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Over six years of experience in an industrial or research environment.
  • Experience with rocket test facilities, chemical laboratories, vacuum systems, and high-pressure systems.
  • Experience handling propellants, cryogens, and high-energy materials.
  • Familiarity with glassware, basic synthesis, chemical handling, and safety procedure development.
