The Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Nurse is a registered nurse specializing in the care of patients with chronic allergic conditions.
Responsibilities
The Allergy Nurse is tasked with:
- Rooming patients and recording histories and vital signs.
- Executing physician orders for specialized diagnostic procedures, including:
* Skin testing and intradermal testing
* Skin patch testing
* Pulmonary function assessments
* Exercise treadmill evaluations
* Administering food and drug challenges
* Monitoring patients closely for procedural risks
* Managing systemic reactions in the clinical setting.
Additionally, the nurse will oversee an immunotherapy and biologic clinic under the direct supervision of a physician.
The Allergy Nurse will also have administrative responsibilities, such as:
- Responding to patient inquiries via phone or electronic messaging.
- Reordering medications.
- Coordinating preauthorizations and arranging deliveries for biologic treatments.
Education/Training
- Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing; RN with either an ADN or BSN.
- Preferred one year of nursing experience in either inpatient or outpatient settings.
- Unrestricted Licensed RN in the state of Illinois.
- BLS Certification required.
- Certification in Asthma Education by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board is preferred.
- Possess the cognitive skills necessary for performing skin testing, intradermal testing, and administering food and drug challenges.
- Proficient in administering medications via various routes and conducting pulmonary function tests.
- Ability to diagnose and treat anaphylaxis in an outpatient environment, including prompt assessment and coordination of care.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others, accept constructive feedback, and adhere to workplace policies.
- Basic computer skills, with EMR experience required; familiarity with Epic and Merge systems preferred.
- Strong organizational skills, multitasking abilities, critical thinking, and excellent communication with the medical team.
- Provide compassionate care to patients and families facing serious medical challenges.
