We are seeking an accomplished and experienced Fusion Plasma Research Scientist to lead experimental campaigns, design, assembly, fielding, and operations of Zap Energy SFS Z-pinch experiment.

Job Summary

This position requires a strong background in fusion plasma physics research, with experience in leading projects and supervising technical staff. The ideal candidate will have excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work through technical challenges, and employ sound solutions through team efforts.

The estimated salary range for this position is $120k - $170k. We offer competitive benefits, flexible vacation, and paid company holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Lead experimental campaigns and supervise scientific and technical staff
  • Assist in the design, assembly, fielding, and operations of Zap Energy research experiments
  • Perform data analysis, reduction, error propagation, publication, and presentation of experimental results
  • Co-supervise Zap Energy Scientists and assist in the design, fielding, and operations of one or more plasma diagnostic systems
Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead assigned projects and supervise scientific and technical staff
  • Experience in design, procurement, assembly, fielding, operations, and analysis of fusion plasma physics experiments
  • Ability to formulate and execute experimental run campaigns
  • Detailed knowledge of plasma diagnostics and instrumentation, including laser interferometry, spectroscopy, neutronics, and magnetics
  • Data acquisition systems and data analysis, including reduction, interpretation, and error analysis
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5-10+ years post-PhD experience in fusion plasma physics research

Zap Energy is building a low-cost, compact, and scalable fusion energy platform that confines and compresses plasma without the need for expensive magnetic coils. Our sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch technology provides compelling fusion economics and requires orders of magnitude less capital than conventional approaches.
