Position Overview

AECOM is seeking a skilled Senior Traffic Safety Specialist (Hybrid) to join our team, with a focus on traffic safety, crash analysis, and traffic engineering. This role offers the flexibility to work both remotely and in our offices, collaborating with a multidisciplinary traffic team across various locations.

Our team partners with local and national clients to address their transportation challenges across all travel modes. Typical responsibilities include safety-related services such as gathering existing crash data, conducting comprehensive field reviews, analyzing crash data to identify potential causes, and developing mitigation strategies along with economic benefit-cost analyses. The ideal candidate will demonstrate independent and creative thinking in reviewing and proposing mitigation measures, effectively presenting findings in reports and presentations.

Additional responsibilities may include engaging in other traffic engineering tasks during periods of reduced safety analysis workload, such as operational analysis and design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts or supervises all facets of safety analysis studies, including crash data collection and analysis using GIS, Excel, or other software.
  • Mentors junior engineers in executing smaller standalone traffic engineering projects or traffic-related tasks within larger projects.
  • Provides daily guidance and support to entry-level engineers in their tasks.
  • Communicates technical findings to internal teams, clients, and the public.
  • Documents findings in technical memoranda and reports.
  • Ensures quality control of work performed by other engineers in accordance with AECOM and client processes.
  • Assists in workload planning for direct reports and coordinates with other discipline leads.
  • Collaborates with other discipline leads to identify project opportunities, market to clients, present at conferences, prepare proposals, and support recruitment efforts.
  • Guides direct reports in setting and achieving professional development goals.
  • Supports project managers in developing scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Proposes innovative solutions to new challenges using modifications of established procedures.
  • Delivers work within agreed-upon budgets and timelines.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree with 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of experience and education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of experience in traffic engineering.
  • Experience in business development activities, including project proposal preparation and firm marketing.
  • Professional Engineer license in the State of Michigan or the ability to obtain it within 6 months.
  • Experience in safety analysis, particularly with Safe Streets and Roads for All grants and Road Safety Audits.
  • Familiarity with the Highway Safety Manual, Crash Modification Factors, Safety Performance Functions, Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM), and Highway Safety Software (HSS).
  • ITE Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) and/or Road Safety Professional (RSP1 or RSP2) certifications.
  • Proficient in standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in project management, staff oversight, and technical skill application, with direct client interaction.
  • Experience in mentoring and developing engineering interns or entry-level staff.
