Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Manage a book of complex primary, direct excess, and reinsurance claims involving Public Sector risks, including professional liability, general liability, automobile, school board legal liability, employment practices liability, law enforcement liability, and public officials liability exposures.
- Investigate and maintain claims, reviewing and evaluating coverage and/or liability, securing necessary information, and working towards resolution.
- Attend arbitrations, mediations, depositions, or trials as necessary, and convey complex information to all appropriate parties.
- Affect settlements/reserves within prescribed limits and submit recommendations to supervisor on cases exceeding personal authority.
- Ensure timely and accurate claims payments and compliance with state, legal, statutory, and regulatory bodies.
- Serve as the technical expert on products and evaluate and make recommendations to executive management on internal and external issues of strategic importance.
- Accountable for achieving performance targets/business results and provide technical advice, assistance, and training to lower-level positions, management, and other functional areas.
- Interact with underwriting and marketing regarding claims trend issues and perform claim reviews and compliance audits of third-party administrators and self-insured pools.
Job Requirements
- JD (Juris Doctorate) preferred, Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
- 8 to 10 years of related experience, multi-lines claims handling experience preferred.
- Experience in litigation, professional and general liability, coverage, and reinsurance preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, time management skills, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft365 suite of products.
- Must be open to travel, including overnight travel as needed.
