Job Title: Building Inspector

The City of Peoria is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Building Inspector to join our Community Development Department. As a Building Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring public safety and enforcing building codes in the City of Peoria.

Job Summary:

The Building Inspector will perform inspections to ensure compliance with building codes, electrical codes, mechanical codes, and energy codes. You will review plans, conduct site visits, and issue permits to ensure that buildings are constructed and maintained in accordance with City regulations.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct inspections of commercial and residential buildings to ensure compliance with building codes and referenced standards.
  • Review submitted building and site plans to ensure compliance with City regulations.
  • Communicate with permit applicants, architects, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with building codes.
  • Issue notices of dangerous buildings or unsafe orders when required.
  • Assist in permit writing process as required.
  • Conduct inspections to assist other departments as needed.
  • Issue stop work orders, violation notices, and penalty tickets for code violations.
  • Answer inquiries from the public regarding building codes and related items.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, Construction, or a related field.
  • Four to five years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • Knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, mechanical codes, and energy codes.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret building construction plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions:

The Building Inspector will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and changing priorities. The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
