Job Summary

The University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Associate Director for Instructional Innovation to join the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with an anticipated start date of Spring 2025. The successful candidate will design, deliver, and assess professional learning opportunities for UIC instructors that couple evidence-based practices with the enabling of digital tools in support of innovative and effective pedagogy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the development, implementation, and facilitation of programming, including on-campus workshops and online webinars, that promotes teaching innovation and disseminates the use of educational technologies and accessible, engaging, learner-centered instructional practices across multiple modalities of instruction.
  • Consult with individual instructors and/or colleges and departments, addressing instructional needs including pedagogical support for educational technologies in on-campus, online, and hybrid courses, including artificial intelligence and other emerging digital learning innovations.
  • Draw upon current, evidence-based strategies in working with UIC instructors, such as Universal Design for Learning, Fink's Taxonomy of Significant Learning, Backward Design, and Bloom's Taxonomy.
  • Research and stay abreast of the educational technology and tools available to instructors within UIC's learning management system (Blackboard).
  • Engage with campus partners to support collaborations across campus units, including UIC Online, the Instructional Design and Media Production Studio, Learning Technology Solutions.
  • Create content for CATE website resources such as teaching guides, which emphasize teaching equitably using educational technology, with attention to balancing innovation and accessibility in digital learning.
  • Work with CATE staff to regularly promote and communicate news, resources, and events via website, newsletter, and/or listserv, and social media platforms.
  • As assigned by the CATE Executive Director, act as a liaison for CATE by attending campus meetings and events and serving as a CATE representative on campus committees such as the Educational Technologies Committee and the Office of Campus Learning Environments (OCLE) advisory board.
  • Provide input for execution of CATE mission and goals to ensure alignment of programs and resources and timely submission of budget requests supporting implementation and sustainability.
  • Represent UIC and CATE by attending and presenting at regional, national, and international conferences; participate in on-campus events such as UIC's IT Community Conference; help in organizing CATE events that bring together colleagues affiliated with our regional teaching and learning centers.
  • Proactively engage in professional development to stay up-to-date on issues relevant to teaching and the enabling educational technologies to support innovation and student learning needs, including artificial intelligence and other emerging digital learning innovations.
  • As opportunities present themselves, engage in scholarly work in collaboration with CATE staff, instructors, and other on-campus and community partners.
  • May have an opportunity to engage in undergraduate or graduate teaching, no more than one course per year.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • PhD or other terminal degree in an academic discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience (1-2 years) in teaching and/or curriculum development at the university level.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver pedagogical training to instructors on using educational technologies and accessible, engaging, learner-centered instructional practices across multiple modalities of instruction.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and research-based educational practices used in teaching and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education with knowledge of matters relevant to UIC context and the lived experiences of UIC students.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver in-person and online pedagogical training to instructors who teach undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional school courses; skill in interacting effectively with large groups of differing social, educational, economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and pay attention to details.
  • Ability to work independently and as a productive, constructive team member.
