Position Summary

The Breast Imaging Specialist is tasked with conducting mammography examinations in accordance with ACR standards. This role encompasses both screening and diagnostic mammography, as well as other radiologic guided procedures such as stereotactic biopsy and breast localization within the Breast Center.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Breast Imaging Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Conducting diagnostic and screening mammographic examinations on adult, adolescent, and geriatric patients in a timely and professional manner.

2. Performing mammographic imaging for breast needle localization and stereotactic procedures as per training.

3. Providing immobilization devices, selecting appropriate technical factors based on individual patient needs, and operating equipment for specific procedures.

4. Ensuring accurate identification of patient images with the correct name and MRN number, and marking images appropriately to indicate the breast side, including the technologist's initials.

5. Assisting with quality control measures and documenting various tests and procedures as delegated by leadership.


6. Compiling statistics for patient follow-ups, tracking breast localizations, and monitoring biopsy recommendations and follow-ups on positive biopsy reports.

7. Documenting quality control and assurance procedures for mammography in compliance with ACR, MQSA, NJ State, and FDA regulations.

8. Utilizing the Faxitron system effectively.

9. Recording pertinent patient information in the EMR (EPIC) system.

10. Identifying the specific needs of the patient population served and tailoring care accordingly, considering factors such as age, culture, and communication needs.


11. Maintaining cleanliness of all equipment following manufacturer recommendations.

12. Understanding and articulating proper shielding protocols as per institutional policies.

13. Ensuring that examination rooms are well-stocked and organized.

14. Properly labeling specimen images and tracking patient locations during their visit.

15. Ensuring timely initiation and completion of appropriate procedures.

16. Recognizing technical errors in equipment and taking corrective actions.

17. Performing additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel, including training new staff.

18. Adhering to the standards outlined in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
1. High School diploma or equivalent.

2. Graduate of an AMA-approved School of Radiologic Technology, with 24 continuing education credits required every two years, including 5 credits specifically for mammography annually.

3. Must meet the requirements for the National Registry (ARRT) and successfully pass the examination.

4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

5. Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Diagnostic Radiography License.

2. Registered Technologist in Radiology & Mammography.

3. Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

4. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
