Department Overview:

The Electronic Systems Development and Embedded Security department at MITRE is on the lookout for skilled and innovative engineers specializing in embedded wireless systems and protocols. These engineers will contribute to advanced research and development initiatives of national importance.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Investigate and devise novel strategies and countermeasures to combat emerging security vulnerabilities in wireless systems.
  • Create and construct prototypes that showcase advanced functionalities.
  • Conduct practical assessments of the functionality and security of wireless systems and their implementations.
  • Develop software to interface with and control laboratory equipment for data acquisition, measurement, and analysis.
  • Generate innovative ideas through internal research and capability enhancement programs to push the boundaries of wireless security.
  • Monitor, adapt, and implement advancements from academia and industry in embedded security analysis and protective measures to safeguard our sponsors' systems.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team, leading tasks and/or groups of engineers.
  • Partner with academic institutions to enhance wireless and security education at universities and high schools across the nation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD without experience in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be a US citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Familiarity with wireless communications, networking, and/or signal processing concepts and protocols.
  • Proficiency in software design using languages such as Python, C/C++, or Rust for both PCs and embedded systems.
  • Experience with software development methodologies, including design and code reviews, testing and regression, version control, and user documentation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • This position requires on-site presence five days a week.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, along with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following technical areas:
    • Implementation of networking and/or wireless communications protocol stacks.
    • Utilization of software-defined radio for wireless networking and communications.
    • Configuration, function development, and evaluation of LTE, 5G, or other radio access networks.
    • Understanding of cryptography and security concepts, including key-agreement protocols, authentication, and encryption.
    • Design of containerized application software and familiarity with container orchestration systems (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
    • Conducting system security assessments, including protocol reverse engineering and vulnerability discovery/assessment.
