About the Job

The Medical Laboratory Scientist position at Houston Methodist is a critical role that requires a high level of technical expertise and analytical skills. As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will be responsible for performing complex laboratory analyses, utilizing various techniques and equipment to ensure accurate and timely results. Your attention to detail and ability to work independently will be essential in maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety in the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and/or manual methods.
  • Organize workload and set priorities to ensure efficient use of time and resources.
  • Meet turnaround time expectations as defined by management.
  • Collaborate with other laboratory staff to ensure seamless operation of the laboratory.
  • Participate in laboratory and organizational initiatives to improve quality and efficiency.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • One year of work or training experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.
  • Must meet certification eligibility upon entry into this role and have one of the following required certifications within 18 months:
  • Preferred - Certified as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or categorical certification by Board of Certification (ASCP).
  • Certified as a Medical Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Certified as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist by National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
Work Environment

This role requires working in a fast-paced laboratory environment with minimal supervision. The ability to work independently and make sound judgments is essential. The successful candidate will be able to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a team environment.
