Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team at St. Luke's University Health Network. As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will be responsible for performing waived, moderate, and highly complex laboratory tests, as well as assuming responsibility for patient testing, problem-solving, and quality control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory tests according to established protocols and procedures.
  • Operate and perform maintenance on laboratory instrumentation per established policies and procedures.
  • Perform quality control testing and document corrective action per established policy.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation with the aid of consulting technical services with proper documentation.
  • Follow established policies regarding accurate documentation of laboratory results in the laboratory information system, instrument records, and other quality assurance data.
  • Follow established policies regarding proper reporting and documentation of critical values.
  • Teach/train new employees and assist in competency assessment.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and order supplies as necessary.
  • Keep adequate inventory and monitor inventory to prevent wastage due to expiration of products.
  • Respond to assist send out bench by assisting in appropriate test selection, researching referral laboratory specimen requirements for collection, handling, storing, and shipping laboratory specimens.
  • Able to accession specimens as necessary.
  • Implement computer downtime procedures when necessary.
  • Demonstrate competency in assigned areas of responsibilities.
  • Organize and prioritize daily workload in order to complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Handle multiple assignments as necessary, with an ability to adapt to changes.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with co-workers to promote a productive working environment.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively, and asking pertinent questions.
  • Perform AIDET.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • ASCP eligible.
  • Two years of clinical laboratory training.
Working Conditions

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, with frequent use of hands for operation of laboratory equipment and computer keyboard. The position requires sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods, as well as occasional lifting of boxes/equipment up to 30 pounds.

The Medical Laboratory Technologist will be exposed to biological hazards when handling patient specimens and through patient contact, as well as possible exposure to chemicals and flammable gases. The position requires the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.
