Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Scientist to join our team at St. Luke's Hospital. As a Laboratory Scientist, you will be responsible for performing waived and moderate complex laboratory tests, teaching/training new employees, problem-solving, and quality control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory tests according to established protocols as designated by supervisor.
  • Interpret physician laboratory orders to assist in appropriate test selection.
  • Research referral laboratory specimen requirements for collection, handling, storing, and shipping laboratory specimens.
  • Accurately transcribe test results or enter results into laboratory information system.
  • Follow established policies regarding proper documentation of critical values, reagent lot numbers, and other quality assurance data.
  • Assume responsibility for problem-solving, teaching of students and/or new employees, quality control, and instrument maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation with the aid of consulting technical services with proper documentation.
  • Keep adequate inventory and order supplies appropriately to ensure limited or no waste due to expiration of products.
  • Assist in method evaluation and technical writing.
  • Organize and prioritize daily workload to complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Serve on various laboratory committees.
  • Demonstrate competency in assigned areas of responsibilities.
  • Attend continuing education or training sessions to meet minimum standards of accrediting agencies.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively, and asking pertinent questions.
Requirements
  • Must meet requirements of 42 CFR Standard Testing Personnel qualifications.
  • Have earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution.

Working Conditions

The Laboratory Scientist will work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, sitting up to 7 hours per day, standing up to 5 hours per day, and walking up to 7 hours per day. The position requires frequent use of hands for operation of laboratory equipment and computer keyboard, occasional lifting of boxes/equipment up to 30 lbs, and occasional pushing/pulling of equipment.

The Laboratory Scientist must be able to hear as it relates to normal, high, and low frequencies, see as it relates to general, far, near, color, and peripheral vision, and have depth perception.
