Summary: Progressive Maryland is dedicated to empowering communities to advocate for social and economic equity. Our organization comprises over 125,000 members and numerous affiliated community, labor, and religious organizations throughout the state.
Role Overview: The Chief Organizer for Housing Justice will work under the guidance of the Campaigns Director to enhance and expand our housing justice initiatives. This role involves collaborating with regional organizers to establish a robust network of tenant organizations and fostering partnerships with potential allies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop a network of tenant leaders by establishing tenant organizations statewide.
- Recruit, mentor, and train members of Progressive Maryland to assume leadership roles within their campaigns.
- Oversee the hiring and management of additional tenant organizers.
- Organize and train members to engage in canvassing and phone banking activities during election cycles.
- Mobilize community members to participate in various actions, including events, legislative testimonies, and petition drives.
- Utilize outreach strategies, including phone calls and community engagement, to recruit and identify potential members.
- Encourage individuals to become dues-paying members of Progressive Maryland.
- Achieve outreach and base-building objectives, ensuring accurate tracking and reporting of progress.
- Collaborate with the Campaigns Director to create and execute strategic campaign plans.
- Represent Progressive Maryland in coalition meetings and discussions related to housing justice initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in tenant organizing, particularly in union drives or issue campaigns.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and lead direct reports.
- Basic computer skills and a readiness to learn new digital tools.
- Capacity to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects effectively.
- Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Experience in training and supervising volunteers.
- Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to navigate complex situations and demonstrate adaptability.
- A deep understanding of the challenges faced by communities and a commitment to addressing these issues.
- Willingness to reside in or relocate to Maryland or DC.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Maryland's political landscape at various governmental levels.
- Experience with campaign management tools such as Votebuilder/VAN.
- Knowledge of criminal justice reform and progressive drug policy initiatives.
Travel Requirements: Reliable access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license is necessary, along with a willingness to travel throughout the region and across Maryland as needed.
Compensation and Benefits: Salary is competitive and based on experience, ranging from $60,000 to $70,000. Benefits include comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan with generous employer matching, paid vacation, personal days, sick leave, and holidays. Progressive Maryland is a unionized workplace.
