Position: Materials and Processes Engineer - Specializing in Chemistry, Contamination Control, and Coatings (Mid-Level, Senior, or Subject Matter Expert)

BR&T is on the lookout for a driven and skilled Engineer with a focus on analytical chemistry and aerospace finishing systems. This role is part of our Chemical Technology team.

The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in analytical and experimental chemistry, particularly in laboratory settings, and will engage in diverse projects encompassing space launch vehicles, satellites, commercial aircraft, and underwater vehicles. A comprehensive understanding of laboratory instruments and aerospace materials is essential, along with the capability to design and implement unique testing setups that leverage knowledge in chemistry, physics, mechanical testing, and basic electronics.

The successful applicant will be adept at leading intricate projects, including the development and qualification of materials, collaborating with a diverse support team. They will be responsible for crafting laboratory test plans that prioritize safety and optimize the use of available resources to support various Boeing initiatives.

Boeing offers competitive compensation and promotes a healthy work-life balance. Candidates should have experience in maintaining and repairing various laboratory equipment and be comfortable with older instruments. When standard equipment is unavailable, the successful candidate will be innovative in creating novel testing setups to address challenges related to materials, components, or processes.

Familiarity with aerospace materials should include knowledge of relevant analytical methods and the ability to establish and verify requirements in material specifications. Experience with hypergolic materials and their safe handling is advantageous.

Additionally, the successful candidate will take on a mentorship role, guiding junior staff to enhance their skills and confidence in the laboratory. They will collaborate effectively with remote team members while requiring minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft and update material or process specifications
  • Implement environmental protection strategies and requirements
  • Investigate corrosion reports and recommend design modifications to mitigate corrosion impacts
  • Conduct failure analyses and lead initiatives for process improvements in finishing systems
  • Engage with government and both internal and external customers
  • Review and approve documentation and drawings related to finishing requirements
  • Oversee production acceptance and/or qualification of materials
  • Assist or lead evaluations of emerging technologies for potential applications
  • Mentor junior engineers

Work Environment:

This position is expected to be 100% onsite, requiring the selected candidate to work at one of the designated locations.

Export Control Compliance:

This position must adhere to export control compliance requirements. A "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required for this role.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science from an accredited institution
  • 3+ years of engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience mentoring entry-level engineers

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of laboratory experience in aerospace analytical chemistry, coatings, and/or inorganic chemical processes
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science

Typical Education/Experience:

Mid-Level: Typically requires advanced technical education from an accredited institution in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g., Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.

Senior: Typically requires advanced technical education from an accredited institution in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g., Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.

Subject Matter Expert: Typically requires advanced technical education from an accredited institution in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g., Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
