Summary Statement
The Wireless Systems Bureau (WSB) Apprenticeship is a temporary role aimed at enabling Department of Public Safety (DPS) Service Employees to investigate potential career paths within the Wireless Systems Bureau. This position offers a pathway to advance to roles such as Telecommunications Technician or Technician Trainee.
This classification is designated as uncovered. The incumbent serves at the discretion of the Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. During the apprenticeship, participants will rotate through various departments within the WSB, engaging in the following areas:
Key Responsibilities:
Subscriber Services Section:
• Oversee subscriber units in the field, including updating IDs, encryption keys, and code plugs.
• Conduct testing and alignment of radios, and manage the testing, repair, and replacement of antennas.
• Execute radio installations and removals, which may involve bending, climbing in and out of vehicles, and lifting objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
WSB Engineering:
• Design and implement the DPS network infrastructure across three primary sections: Land Mobile Radio, Microwave Systems, and WAN/LAN Systems.
• Strong computer skills and meticulous attention to detail are essential.
GIS:
• Develop detailed drawings and maps of system layouts using various computer programs.
• Proficiency in computer-Aided Design (CAD) software is required.
Infrastructure Maintenance Team:
• Install and maintain systems designed by WSB Engineering.
• Perform technical maintenance on tower sites, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with Microwave Systems, WAN/LAN Systems, and Land Mobile Radio Systems.
• Strong technical and computer skills, along with the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs., are necessary.
Communications Site Maintenance Team:
• Maintain tower sites, including climbing towers to install and maintain Microwave Dishes and antennas.
• Responsible for the upkeep of tower structures, site buildings, and generators.
• Requires mechanical aptitude and the ability to climb heights up to 300 feet (Note: Climbing duties are not included during this apprenticeship).
Encryption/ID/Code Plug Office:
• Compile radio frequency lists, maintain encryption keys and individual ID spreadsheets, and collaborate with other agencies to ensure interoperability.
• Strong organizational and computer skills are required.
Supply:
• Procure materials for system construction and maintenance, including ordering parts and radio equipment.
• Maintain accurate asset and inventory lists and manage equipment returns for repair.
• Strong computer and organizational skills are essential.
Training and Safety:
• Adhere to all DPS safety standards, including wearing steel-toed or composite safety boots, safety glasses, and gloves as required.
• Complete online and in-person training in electronics, electrical troubleshooting, safety protocols, and the use of test equipment and basic hand tools.
