Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health and Safety Manager to join our team at Packaging Corporation of America. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for our employees and contractors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Safety Plans: Identify and communicate world-class health and safety performance goals, set targets, and implement safety plans to improve mill performance.
  • Manage Safety Programs and Policies: Develop, implement, and manage mill safety plans, programs, policies, procedures, and training requirements to ensure employee and contractor compliance with OSHA standards and PCA safe operating procedures.
  • Facilitate Open Communication: Facilitate an environment of open communication, ownership, accountability, rapid follow-up, and resolution regarding safety issues and concerns.
  • Conduct Compliance Audits: Conduct facility compliance audits to ensure adherence to OSHA standards and PCA safe operating procedures.
  • Manage Workers' Compensation Claims: Manage worker's comp claims administration, doctor relations, injury investigation, and return-to-work programs.
  • Recognize Hazardous Conditions: Recognize hazardous conditions and unsafe acts and their cause, and make appropriate corrective measures.
  • Coordinate Emergency Response: Coordinate emergency response and fire brigade policies, training, and drills.
  • Investigate Safety Issues: Investigate all safety issues with a sense of urgency and follow up until resolution.
  • Respond to Emergencies: Respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Hold Employees Accountable: Demonstrate managerial courage to address employees not meeting safety expectations, creating a hazard to themselves and others.
  • Facilitate Housekeeping Improvements: Facilitate mill housekeeping improvements by setting high standards and expectations, as well as conducting regular housekeeping audits.
  • Manage Hazardous Materials: Manage hazardous materials communication and training.
  • Monitor Workplace Exposures: Monitor workplace exposures to chemicals, dust, noise, and electromagnetic fields.
  • Coordinate Inspections and Maintenance: Coordinate inspections and maintenance of all fire systems.
  • Produce Safety Statistical Data: Produce safety statistical data for each department and work with mill safety committees and other teams.
  • Know and Follow Policies: Know and follow policies and procedures of the company, share information that would benefit other members of the team, and find ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety: Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety preferred.
  • 3-5 Years of Experience in Safety Field: 3-5 years of experience in the safety field.
  • Knowledge of OSHA Standards: Knowledge of OSHA standards that apply to the pulp, paper, and forest industry, Workers' Comp Laws, EPA regulations, and industrial hygiene practices.
  • Supervisory Experience: Supervisory experience with both exempt and non-exempt employees.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Certified Safety Professional: Certified Safety Professional preferred.
  • Ability to Prepare and Present Training Sessions: Capable of preparing and presenting training sessions to all levels of mill employees on topics related to occupational safety and health.
  • Ability to Work Well Under Pressure: Work well under pressure and within time constraints, multi-task, and build sound relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Excellent Analytical and Organizational Skills: Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to Make Sound Decisions: Capable of independently making sound decisions through creative problem-solving and detailed requirements-gathering.
  • Ability to Work Well with Others: The ability to work well with others in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Ability to Work with Ambiguity and Change: Capable of working with ambiguity and change.
  • Strong Computer Skills: Strong computer skills required, including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Previous Work Experience as a Team Member: Previous work experience as a member of a team, or a strong understanding of the importance of open communication and information sharing between team members.
