Position Overview

The Clinical Nurse in the Observation Unit is a dedicated and proficient Registered Nurse (RN) who plays a vital role in delivering exceptional nursing care and overseeing patient management. Reporting to the Clinical Unit Supervisor, this position entails a 12-hour accountability for the organization, planning, direction, coordination, and provision of high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care, adhering to the Watson Model of Care. The nurse is expected to recognize and address the unique needs of diverse patient populations, demonstrating a commitment to the mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and embodying its core values.


Key Responsibilities
  1. Utilize the nursing process as a systematic approach to problem-solving, leveraging expertise to anticipate and fulfill patient and family needs.
  2. Conduct focused nursing assessments to identify critical areas for intervention, recognizing subtle clinical changes and adjusting care plans accordingly.
  3. Exhibit the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, consistently applying current research and critical thinking to inform clinical decisions.
  4. Engage in the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction initiatives through positive interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  5. Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients throughout their healthcare journey, ensuring respect for patient rights as a fundamental aspect of care.
  6. Employ the SBAR communication technique during all hand-off situations to ensure clarity and continuity of care.
  7. Document patient care meticulously, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care, implementations, evaluations, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care.
  8. Anticipate factors affecting patient comfort and modify interventions accordingly, empowering patients and families to participate actively in their recovery.
  9. Commit to addressing the educational needs of patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources to achieve favorable patient outcomes.
  10. Collaborate with Care Managers to coordinate interdisciplinary discharge planning tailored to specific patient populations.
  11. Review patient orders and communicate any changes in patient conditions to physicians and team members promptly.
  12. Assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions and document outcomes in the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  13. Utilize patient classification systems in accordance with established standards.
  14. Demonstrate leadership by planning, supervising, instructing, and evaluating ancillary nursing personnel, ensuring thorough evaluations are conducted for registry and float staff.
  15. Maintain a professional appearance in accordance with dress code policies, promoting proper identification standards among peers and staff.
  16. Ensure a safe and clean environment that meets regulatory standards, including Patient Safety Goals.
  17. Participate in the execution of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan, completing monitoring forms and reporting findings to the Clinical Unit Supervisor.
  18. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A. Education:
Associates in Nursing required; Bachelor's in Nursing preferred.

B. Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year of clinical nursing experience in a Definitive Observation Unit, Emergency Department, Telemetry, ICU, or Progressive Care Unit. Current California Nursing license is required.

C. Skills:
Bilingual skills (Spanish) preferred, along with basic computer proficiency. Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are necessary. Completion of Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB) training within 90 days of hire or transfer is required. Experience with Electronic Medical Records is preferred.
