Key Responsibilities- Provide charge therapist duties, including assigning workload, updating department information management systems, and preparing workload assignments for the next shift.
- Provide patient care in assigned areas, including initiating, monitoring, and weaning mechanical ventilation, making parameter recommendations, and managing airways.
- Precept employees during new employee orientation and during orientation to a specialty care unit.
- Assist with policy and procedure updates and development.
- Perform pulmonary function testing, including spirometry, lung volume testing, body plethysmography, methacholamine challenge testing, and arterial puncture and blood gas analysis.
- Administer bronchial hygiene and treatment procedures, including aerosol therapies, chest physical therapy, and therapeutic gas administration.
- Assess patients clinically before and after the administration or application of any medication, procedure, or device, and recommend appropriate therapy.
- Apply CPAP and BIPAP and make recommendations based on patient compliance, response, and laboratory values.
- Participate in CQI and QA initiatives, including work audits, abstracts, research, Daily Management System (DMS) projects, committee participation, or other activities to improve the clinical and work environments.
- Develop patient-driven protocols in conjunction with department leadership.
- Document work timely, completely, and accurately, including documentation in the patient medical record, documentation in the department records, and patient billing.
- Assess patient oxygenation, ventilation, and hemodynamic status through clinical observation, patient assessment, physiologic monitoring, and laboratory values.
- Participate in on-going maintenance of the blood gas equipment, QC, calibration, and proficiency testing.
- Demonstrate initiative in optimizing patient care by participating in physician rounds and documenting assessment findings and therapy changes.
- Provide patient/family education.
- Perform bronchoscopy assist.
- Assist in completing staff competencies and provide input on staff performance to department management.
- Provide clinical supervision of respiratory care students on rotation.
- Demonstrate professionalism by belonging to a professional organization and/or pursuing education to advance one's skills.
- Serve on RCS or hospital department committees as assigned.
- Publish in a professional journal and/or lecture at a professional meeting.
- Master's degree or proof of enrollment into Master Degree Program within one year of hire with proof of Bachelor's Degree.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist and an Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
- NBRC Adult Critical Care (ACCS) specialty credential within one year of hire.
- Technical skills to adapt equipment and procedures to patient needs.
- Analytical skills to evaluate patients and their clinical response to therapy.
- Customer service skills to effectively meet the needs of patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
- Above average interpersonal skills to provide direction to other staff.
- Excellent communication skills for precepting and communication with colleagues.
