Mosquito Surveillance Technician

As an entry-level professional in the field, your responsibilities will include identifying and documenting mosquito breeding locations, collecting samples, and performing preliminary assessments of various mosquito life stages. You will also engage in pest management activities, create diverse maps and charts, and maintain biological records as needed.


Essential Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or G.E.D. from an accredited State Department of Education is required.
A valid driver's license is mandatory.

Applicants should be in good physical health, possess swimming skills, and be prepared for extensive outdoor fieldwork. A background in biology or entomology is advantageous.

This role necessitates a probationary period of one (1) year.

  • Before appointment, the hiring agency will confirm the education and driver's license claimed by the applicant. If selected, original documents must be provided to the hiring agency before commencing employment.
Evaluation of training and experience will be conducted, with a weighting of 100%.

All relevant prior experience will be considered for qualification; however, only experience gained within the last ten (10) years will contribute to the training and experience rating.

This is an original entrance examination.

Employment Domicile Requirements:
Currently, domicile requirements are waived for application purposes.

However, all new full-time employees hired into this classification must establish residency in Orleans Parish within 180 days of hire.

Mail Delays:

The minimum age requirement is 18 years for any position involving strenuous physical labor, operation of hazardous machinery, exposure to dangerous chemicals, or participation in any processes or procedures restricted by the Louisiana State Child Labor Law.


Probationary Period:

Effective August 1, 2023, the probationary period for all positions in the classified service is one year.


Substance Abuse Screening:
The City of New Orleans implements a comprehensive substance abuse testing program.

Candidates for certain positions that pose risks to public health, safety, and welfare will undergo pre-employment substance abuse screening.

All other original entrance candidates will be subject to unannounced substance abuse testing during their probationary period.

Medical Examination:

A medical examination is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to ACTIVE classifications and may be necessary for re-employment, promotions, or transfers.


Medical Screening:

A medical screening, which may lead to a medical examination, is required for all original entrance probationary appointments to non-active classifications.


Character Requirements:
All applicants must demonstrate good moral character.

Any applicant may be disqualified if their character or past employment record is deemed unsatisfactory by the Department of City Civil Service.

Instances of forgery, misrepresentation of facts, or cheating on examinations may result in disqualification, fines, and other penalties.

Important Note:

Applicants with a driver's license should carry it for identification during all examination phases.

If a driver's license is unavailable, the Department of City Civil Service may require some form of picture identification.


Veterans Preference:

On original entrance examinations, veterans, disabled veterans, certain spouses, and parents of veterans may receive additional credit if claimed as outlined on the Veterans Preference claim form.

To obtain credit, this form must be submitted with the required proof before the final filing date.


High School Diploma and General Equivalency Diploma (GED): Must be issued by a state Department of Education or an institution recognized by a state Department of Education.

Certificates of completion, high school diplomas, and GED from institutions not recognized by a state Department of Education, and high school diplomas from foreign countries are not acceptable.


Accredited Colleges and Universities:

An accredited college or university is defined as an institution accredited by an organization recognized by the USDE (United States Department of Education).

College diplomas from foreign countries will be accepted if the applicant provides a statement of educational equivalency from one of the evaluation services recognized by the Department of Civil Service.

Experience Considerations:
Applicants will not receive credit for unpaid work unless specified in the job announcement. Partial credit will be granted for related part-time employment. Civil Service reserves the right to determine which degrees, education, or other credentials are related or closely related. Experience credit will be granted for related provisional appointments (internal applicants).

Before appointment, the hiring agency must verify education, driver's license, and/or professional licenses/certifications claimed by the applicant.

If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency before starting in this job classification.
