Position Overview

Role Summary

Under the guidance of the Director of Surgery, the Surgical Services Registered Nurse (RN) is entrusted with the planning, delegation, and coordination of nursing care for assigned patients through the nursing process. This role requires the RN to uphold the standards of care and practice while assisting in the management of the nursing team, which includes LPNs, ORTs/CSTs, Nursing Assistants, and administrative staff, as well as overseeing the supplies and equipment within the department.

The RN is expected to demonstrate accountability and professionalism by collaborating with various ancillary departments and healthcare team members to set and achieve patient care objectives, ensuring a high standard of quality care. Responsibilities include preparing for surgical procedures, fulfilling the circulating role, and potentially assisting the physician in the scrub role. The RN must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care tailored to the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related needs of patients across all age groups, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. All duties are to be performed in an ethical and professional manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, delegate, and coordinate nursing care for a designated patient population.
  • Conduct assessments, develop care plans, implement interventions, and evaluate patient outcomes.
  • Supervise and assign tasks to LPNs, ORTs/CSTs, and Nursing Assistants, ensuring accuracy in their work.
  • Prepare and administer medications as prescribed, overseeing the administration of medications in the sterile field.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including charge records and information transfer to designated locations.
  • Ensure the department is consistently prepared for patient care.
  • Adhere to and enforce safety and infection control policies to maintain a secure environment.
  • Identify emergency situations and respond appropriately.
  • Conduct daily checks of emergency supplies and equipment.
  • May serve in the scrub and/or circulating role during surgical procedures.
  • Restock supplies in assigned areas daily and notify the appropriate personnel when supplies are low.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Surgery.


Qualifications:

  • Current SC Nursing License.
  • Previous experience in an operating room setting is required.
